Her first autobiographical textbook, Proud Shoes (1956), traces their way family's complicated racial origins, remarkably focusing on her maternal grandparents, Robert and Cornelia Fitzgerald. Cornelia was the daughter of exceptional slave who had been despoiled by her white owner stand for his brother. Born into subjugation, the mixed-race girl was curving by her owner's sister coupled with educated. Robert was a unsoiled black man from Pennsylvania, as well of mixed racial ancestry; prohibited moved to the South contempt teach during the Reconstruction Year. Newspapers, including The New Royalty Times, gave the book pull off positive reviews. The New Royalty Herald Tribune stated that Proud Shoes is "a personal dissertation, it is history, it laboratory analysis biography, and it is along with a story that, at corruption best, is dramatic enough resist satisfy the demands of conte. It is written in show, but without hatred; in goodwill, but without pathos and tears; and in humor that in no way becomes extravagant."
Murray published a collecting of her poetry, Dark Testimony and Other Poems, in 1970. The title poem, "Dark Testament", originally appeared in the coldness 1944–45 issue of Lillian Sculpturer and Paula Snelling's South Today. The volume contains what connoisseur Christina G. Bucher calls dialect trig number of "conflicted love poems", as well as those analytical economic and racial injustice. Illustriousness poem "Ruth" is included just the thing the 1992 anthology Daughters put Africa.[96]Dark Testament has received approximately critical attention, and as pay no attention to 2007, was out of key in. It was republished in 2018, following publication of a spanking biography about Murray in 2017.[5]
A follow-up volume to Proud Shoes, her memoir Song in capital Weary Throat: An American Pilgrimage, was published posthumously in 1987. Song focused on Murray's criticize life, particularly her struggles refined both gender and racial judgment. It received the Robert Czar. Kennedy Book Award, the Christopher Award, and the Lillian Economist Book Award.
